3s overcome 4s in Inter-Club Battle

It was the day that both the 3s and 4s had been waiting for. All club friendships put to one side for 70 minutes, as the first full league meeting between two Chapeltown teams for many a year took place. Welcome to the Battle of Hinde House.
Alright, perhaps a little bit over the top but it’s fair to say there was a little extra incentive to this fixture. It was a good turnout too with the teams boasting 30 players between them. For the 3s part, Crumpy in goal coupled with the addition of Gina G were their only changes in personnel.
There was an interesting observation in warm-up, the 4’s mirroring the 3s routine, but would they may be able to mirror the opposition in the game itself.
The game started with the 3s on the front foot. Hutch was finding plenty of space in the pivot and was releasing Mad Max and Von Ryan on the flanks. Shep, starting at right back, was pushing forward to increase the outlets. It wasn’t long before a ball into the D gained a short corner. A very elaborate discussion took place to discuss which routine to try. With the team set, Iceburg, the injector, sent the ball out to completely the wrong player confusing the players surrounding the D. Chuckle#2 and Tomahawk Bandit did well to improvise but the resultant shot went wide.
3s maintained the pressure and a further penalty corner gained. This time Iceburg stuck to the script. His short injection to Hutch sowed doubt in the defenders mind. Two passes later, and with the defenders chasing shadows, the ball pulled back towards Chuckle#2 to try to open up a shooting opportunity. Unfortunately the ball was slightly inaccurate and the ball left the D. The 3s retained possession though and a few short passes later the ball was returned to D where Iceburg was on hand, in the crowd of players, to push the ball into the net for 1-0.
With the scoring started the 3s started to lose a bit of composure. Play began to become messy and too direct. The 4s defence were coping comfortably but were not really able to relieve the pressure created by the advanced 3s midfield. It was little surprise then that the 3s doubled the lead with a goal that included both skill and luck. With attacks generally focussed down the left channel, Von Ryan and Chuckle were able to play in Tomahawk Bandit on the baseline of the D. Tomahawk Bandit was able to dribble past three 4s defenders along the baseline before mis-hitting his final finish. The mis-hit did all the damage though, and with the 4s online defender wrong footed, the ball trickled over the line for 2-0. Tomahawk then thought he had made it 3-0 shortly after as his slapped shot found the net, but umpire Reg Hollis blew just as he was receiving the ball for an earlier infringement thinking there was no advantage. Half Time 2-0.
The second half became a slightly more even affair. The longer the 3s went without adding to the score the more they panicked and lost composure. There was an element of tunnel vision to their play and frustration was leading to mistakes. In goal, the up until now redundant Crumpy was called upon to make a couple of smart saves from 4s breakaways. The 3s were still on top though and did create chances of their own but lacked composure to apply the final finish. Positive communication became virtually non-existent and this was to lead to the 4s best chance. After losing the ball cheaply in the attacking third, and the midfield advanced, the 4s played a ball directly through the middle. Boss Hogg and Shep, going for the same ball, got in each other’s way and allowed the ball to continue through towards goal. As the 4s attacker bared down on the D the defenders blushes were spared by the impressive Crumpy coming out big and beating the ball away.
From there time was played out with the score remaining 2-0.
Back at the Ranch Chuckle#2 was voted MOM Starblazer with an unusual winner of the DOD Hot Dog, on a little known DOD ruling (ie. we made it up). Step forward ‘former 3s’ Modern Man who inexplicably sneakily turned out for the 4s even though he’d been ‘unavailable’ all week!!
